Mary Tierney Oberg, 85, passed away Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, after a long illness. She was born Rockford's New Year baby in 1917, the daughter of William and Alice Tierney. In 1939 she married Carl A. Oberg, and shared a long and loving marriage until his death in 1987. Mary was a dedicated elementary teacher in Rockford Public Schools for many years, and also served as elementary art coordinator. In addition to providing a loving home for her family, she served her church as a Sunday school teacher, providing summer art programs for at-risk children, and was a faithful volunteer for Meals-on-Wheels and in several nursing home. Her many friends remember her generous nature and creative talents.
She is survived by three children, Jack (Sandra) Oberg of Rockton, Bruce (Rae Anne) Oberg of Rockford and Cheryl A. Peters of Virginia Beach, Va.; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Alice Ippen of Rockford; and numerous treasured nieces and nephews. Also predeceased by parents; and sisters, Janet Moore and Charlotte Zionic.
A memorial service for Mary will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17, in Beth-Eden United Methodist Church, 3201 Huffman Blvd., with the Rev. John Wesley Lee, pastor, officiating.
